Nosferatu

Nosferatu

Good. No need to say that I felt very flattered that Axxón and especially Laura Ponce, have thought of me to illustrate a story of those many that are published in this prestigious Argentine portal. To all, thank you very much!

My comment:
After other e-mails, I received of Laura Ponce the story "E.T.-V." of Judith Shapiro. Judith Shapiro was born in Rosario, Santa Fe, January 16, 1989. She finished the first year of Anthropology and she is to receive the piano teacher's title in a particular institute.
She is writing from some time ago, although she cannot dedicate it the time that she would like. She is member of the online literary workshop Taller 7 and she has stories published in Axxón, special of Alpha Eridiani about Argentinean cf and Golwen.

What I most liked of Judith Shapiro's story was the pessimistic substructure relating to what the television can make with our minds. It is easy to sit down to see television and to gorge a quantity of garbage programs and of commercial that push us to the compulsive consumption, as well as the change of habits of life, of dressing and of eating. In this mark Shapiro builds a simple story in which an extraterrestrial being ends up abandoning his pretenses of studying the human race, when bumping into the less indicated specimen. A simple reason for which the beings of other worlds don't want to socialize with the human race.

Algo realmente espantoso.

In the story we have three characters:
The fat man: Of proportions exaggeratedly big and flabby body. He has on a white T-shirt, with rancid and yellow stains under the armpits and around the neck, and underpants. The man's neck is wide and soft, with layers of fat and dark stains of perspiration that give a touch of color to the pleats of his skin. The beard not very long with splashes of crumbs, salt, blobs of candy, and fat, the same one of the head. The fat and weak arms rest on the lap, sustaining the deep plate with peanut and the can of cold beer recently open.

The alien: High and oval head. The neck is fine but very flexible, in the same way of the arms. These finish in four fingers, of which one stays immobile. He has empathy and telepathic abilities.

The fat man's mother: There is not the physical description of the mother in the story. Only a psychological underlying description through her behavior: To consent the dear son, buying him beers, sodas and peanut. To accept her son's insults, she shows coward and pusillanumous, opting to remain silent and to smile. Something really awful.

As the action is developed mainly between the fat man and the alien, I decided to eliminate the character of the mother of the illustration, since she only appears interacting with the alien in a single opportunity, when she gives him a can of beer. In passing, the presence of the television like a "Big Brother" it’s always, dominating the scene.
The action is developed in a dark room where there is the television and an armchair of three seats. In the room should be also cans of beer and sodas spread everywhere, a deep plate full with peanut and, supposedly, remains of other candies; for what is told about the fat man's beard.

In the electronic’s workshop
What intrigued me from the beginning was the title of the story: E.T.-V. To such a point that I had to bother Laura Ponce asking her for its meaning again.
I suppose that it is a game of words (or initials) between "E.T." (Extraterrestrial) and "T.V." (Television). It is something as "ET V". (The Extraterrestrial sees) —the answer that I received for her part.

With this in mind, I began to look for the appropriate font type for the title of the story. After seeing infinity of fonts, I remembered have seen in a book a font in especific, that imitates the horizontal lines of the electronic sweeping of the catódic rays tube on the screen of the television. The book in question is the annual Mecanorma Graphic Book 14, printed in Barcelona, Spain in 1988. From there I took out the font titled "Television." Now, that font should have a specific color: green, in general for being the associated color to the aliens in the first istories of Science fiction. From Mars the Martians come, and they are green color, and it stayed this way.

Another element to keep in mind was the televisión set. What televisión set type would suit the illustration? I decided that it should be a model with mustache antenna. This way the mustaches of the antenna, lifted, would form a "V" that would connect to the title of the story with the televisión set. The television set should be seen from the back, so it was possible to observe the faces of the fat man and the extraterrestrial being.

As the action is developed in the dark room of the fat man's house, the only light would be the coming from the screen of the television. Then, to create an ghostly effect it was necessary to project shades. For it was necessary to put a wall behind of the armchair of three seats. On the wall the shades of the armchair, the fat man and the alien would be projected. The bottom of the wall was very plain, for what I added a lattice of lines and arabesque to create the sensation that the wall is papered. On the other hand, I planned to add paintings and ceramic decorations to the wall, but that would recharge the scene, making it a little difficult to read the letters of the title. However, I added a black roof to highlight the name of the author of the story, and a wood strip.

For the alien design I respected the characteristics given by Judith Shapiro, but I added something of my own crop that comes out of the mixture of three types of extraterrestrial: The typical alien of the area 51 in Roswell, Arizona; Draco of the movie "Enemy Mine", 1985, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, based on the history of the same title by Barry B. Longyear; and "Predator", 1987, of John McTiernan.

For the fat man I used Philip K. Dick's portrait whom I drew bald and with some extra kilos. In this case I didn't continue the directions for the fat man's description that gives us Judith Shapiro, like the color of the T-shirt, and the state of abandonment that showed, if not that I limited myself to draw him nicer and with a blue dark T-shirt, with so numbers printed in the chest and the sleeves. I added him, also, an orange bowl full with popcorns and some can of soda of a mark invented by me "Mars Cola."

The work should have taken me some 10 hours in total, among making the preliminary sketch, definitive draw, inking, digitalization and coloring. The used program was the Suite of CorelDraw 12. Especially my three favorite: Corel Photopaint for the erased of dirts and details not wanted after the digitalization. CorelTrace for to turn to vector the digitized drawing. And lastly, the program in yes of vectorial drawing, CorelDraw 12.
To conclude I added the stamp of the editorial, the logo of the collection "Series Allies" and my electronic mail.
I hope they like it.
