How it was done, the ilustration of “The Arm of the Other One) of Eudelio Pérez

I found the story of Eudelio Pérez, "El Brazo del Otro" (The Arm of the Other One) really amusing. To such a point that made me short and left me wishing for more.

Here the link to Eudelio Pérez’s story (I’m Sorry. Only in Spanish Lenguaje):
My Comment

For the illustration of this cover I focused the following paragraph of the story:

“It was time to take to the patient to the operating room. Lilia accompanies him and she will be present during the operation. Soon after, he is anesthetized. The arm that they will implant him is on a little table. The surgeon sustains it among his hands and compares it with the other one, checking that it is identical. Then he begins to make the cut in the elbow, extracts the rest of the damaged arm and places the one will implant that fits perfectly as piece of a puzzle.
He pass several hours in the delicate and complex work of joining veins, tendons and other. The Dr. Dorante smiles when finishing their work, the operation has been successful".

Why? Well, in this case the title of the story makes allusion to the arm of another man. It became necessary that the image reflected "something" of what mentions the title.

Of this paragraph I took to create the cover image the following sentence: " The surgeon sustains it among his hands and compares it with the other one, checking that it is identical". There I saw the possibilities to make an image that showed to the Doctor Dorante sustaining an arm among their hands. The place that would reflect the image should be a operating room and the elected angle to show the image it would be a Low Angle. The Low Angle, also well-known as “worm hole” or the “devil's view”, it’s a film angle that takes the characters from a low angle, making them big, powerful and fearful. In this case I wanted that the arm was seen as the principal element of the image, to the Doctor Dorante and the Luminaire of the operating room in second place. The sensation that I looked for to produce was that seemed that the character that is put to bed in the table of operations is the own reader.

Cirugía Mayor
Major Surgery

Figura 1.

With those three elements (Doctor Dorante, Arm and luminaire of the operating room), and keeping in mind the camera angle, I began to sketch to pencil the scene of the operating room. In this sketch to pencil also I prepared the title of the story and the stamp of the collection (hardly appreciable). Figure 1.

Figura 1 (Figure 1)

Figura 2.

The following step went to take the sketch to ink. I used a technical disposable pen Nº 0.3 and a new paper sheet for this process. As I had in mind certain effects of light and color that I will explain later on, I made each part of the sketch separately (less the luminaire of the operating room. This it would make it directly with my favorite drawing vectorial program). All the parts would be assembled again in the final image. Figures 2.

Figura 2 (Figure 2)

The digitalization or scanning of the Inked drawing were the following step. For it I recommend to have free of powder and dirt the surface of glass of the escanner. Made the scanning I opened the suite of CorelDraw 12 and used the program Photopaint 12 to clean some stain or imperfection. Also this takes advantage to assure that all the images have a closed line (this would bring problems at the moment of the colored digital one). The digitalization was made with the scanner in Black and White mode to 300 dpi.

After cleaned the image scanned of any imperfection, I opened the program CorelTrace 12 that it comes in the same Suite of CorelDraw 12, To turn the image into vector. The vectorization of an image BitMap is not any more that to turn the above mentioned image into a drawing done with curves that can be edited. These images are called vectorial images. The vectorial images are not more than mathematical algorithms that describe the lines, curves and colors of the image. This allows to reduce or to increase the image without it degrades.

Figura 3.

Turned into vectors the parts of the Figure 2, we copy them and we take them to the program of vectorial drawing, CorelDraw 12. There they are assembled and colored. The luminaire of the roof of the operating room was made with the tools of vectorial drawing of the program (Ellipse Tool and Raised Hand Tool). Figure 3.

Figura 3 (Figure 3)

Figura 4.

Now we open my program 3D favorite, LightWave 3D 9.5, to place the image of the Figure 3 in front of the camera. We add some lights with gleams (Lens Flare) pointing toward the camera. Figure 4.

Figura 4 (Figure 4)

The idea is that the lights of the luminaire of the operating room emit a blinding shine. We also add some aberrations of the lens to achieve a more realistic effect. We make a render and we obtain the image of the Figure 5.

Figura 5 (Figure 5)

We return with the image of the Figure 5 to CorelDraw 12 to place the name of the author, taking care that it was the sufficiently important thing without displacing in attention to the title. Then we put the editorial stamp, "Siverio-terror" and the logotype of a collection titled "Series Panic" in which you see the face what seems an afraid mandrill, to indicate the primary fear.

Finally, I signed the work with my e-mail.

How it was done, the ilustration for the first part of "The Caveman" of Eudelio Pérez

The history of Eudelio Pérez, "The Caveman", is a novel full with adventures. For this first part, that narrates the expedition of a group of scientific to the south pole, I took the following piece of the story:

"Inside big blocks of ice they are the cadavers of two mamuts in perfect conservation state and very strange plants of different species that still conserve their greenery. They see a giant dragonfly to which she was lacking a wing, a mouse of great size, several giant mosquitos, three cockroaches, almost the same as the current ones, of bigger size, and other small animals and insects."

This happens when the scientists decide to explore a cavern that was created after a quake.

Mi comentario:

My comment:

Of the piece of the story mentioned previously, I found that the mamuts was enough sugerentes to carry out an illustration. Now, it was necessary that the image showed to the astonished scientists, observing to the frozen mamuts.

For the mamuts I looked for in Internet graphics references to draw them correctly. With regard to the scientists they should dress in an uniform way, with heavy coats that would protect them of the polar climate cruel. I also thought that their suits should be of a single color, in this case the red one, since it is a color easy to visualize in the big extensions of ice of the south pole.

The image for the illustration was conformed in the following way: Three scientists, stopped in front of a great wall of ice to observe astonished the bodies of two frozen mamuts.

La ferretería

The hardware store

Ver Figura 1.

At the last hour, after carrying out a previous sketch, I decided that just by showing a mammoth of great size, dominating the scene, in front of three scientists, it would be enough. The scientists would be of backs to the spectator, in order to involve the person that observes the scene like one more of the group that conforms the expedition. Figure 1.

Figura 1 (Figure 1)

The work should have taken me some 8 hours in total, among making the preliminary sketch, definitive drawing, inked, scanning and colored. The used program was the Suite of CorelDraw 12. Especially my three favorite: Corel Photopaint for the one erased of dirts and details not wanted after the scanning. CorelTrace to transform in vector the scanned drawing. And lastly, the program itself of vectorial drawing, CorelDraw 12.

As the idea it was to carry out an illustration for the cover of a book, I invented the editor's logo: "Siverio SF", (Science Fiction), and I placed it in the superior left corner of the cover. I also added the logo of the collection that consists in the words "Science-Fiction", in the inferior part of the cover.

For the title of the work and the author's name I chose a letter type without decorations, so that she gave an idea of force. The used source was Arial Black, that transmits that idea of force that I wanted for the title. I added a red color, as the suits of the scientists, so that it highlighted of the bottom of white bluish color. Above the title of the story I put the author's name in a yellow greenish color, in a discreet way, so that it continued in reading priority.

Para finalizar agregué mi correo electrónico.

To finish I added my e-mail.

Espero les guste.

I hope they like it.

Mi comentario
My comment:

I found The Ariel Tenorio’s story stupendous. I felt with their reading that anything was clear, as if I was reading through a dirty glass. For this reason, the story is so forceful at the hour of bristling the skin, in the moment that the spectrum Nanaboush and the dead girl begin a conversation. It's like that, that I thought that it would be necessary that the image that was illustrating this story was working that way.

A saber:
In the story of Ariel Tenorio there is only three characters. That is:

Nanaboush or Powder Demon: Spectrum dressed with some faded rags. With white hands and without fingernails. Of their neck hangs something horrible: a necklace of dead birds. This is everything. There is not more. It’s not spoken of their stature, neither of their physical aspect.

The girl (or Dholl, after dead): Of five or six years, according to the story. Of long hair. After dead she had the open eyes, she moved and spoke with completely empty expression.

The girl's aunt: It’s only known that she was working in the kitchen and she had an apron. There is not more description on their physical aspect.

Of the whole story I find that the image that summarizes all the horror, is appreciated in the vision that had the aunt in the moment to face to the spectrum:
"Aunt went out to the back patio and when she focused the sight her voice was made stone in the throat.

A silhouette without face was sustaining in his arms her dead niece, who nonetheless had the opened eyes and was moving.
It was as a marionette. An empty lively body artificially.
Before falling down of knees and losing the reason, Aunt saw that that being had a necklace of dead birds hanging of the neck."

With this in mind, I decided to capture an image where was seen to the spectrum, and to the girl died in their arms, keeping in mind the following:
To give more force to the image I decided to eliminate the character of the aunt of the illustration. The represented image would be this way the aunt's vision before losing the reason.
The image should be diffuse and not to show more details of the necessary ones. The horror would be accentuated when not being able to detail the image, leaving something to the spectator's imagination. Less is more.

La Ferretería
The Hardware Store

The first thing that I thought was in the stamp of the collection. I thought that "Colección tumba abierta" it was sounding interesting since the story is about "doors" that are oponed from a dimension to other, from the world of the spectra to the world of the alive ones. Then I found that it was necessary to accompany the title of the collection with a human skull. After to look for in Internet and to see books of human anatomy I leaned to carry out a drawing by lifted hand with the pencil tool of my favorite program of vectorial drawing CorelDraw 12. The source type used for the stamp of the collection is Mesquite Std.

The other thing that I thought was that it should have a dominant color in the composition. I thought that the black one, For being a traditional color in this type of illustrations, is elegant and helps to create a general somber tone.
The title has the source type Algerian, in red so that it highlighted on the black bottom. The author's name I added it above the title and in a color yellow banana (just by 60% of yellow and 20% of black).

For the image of Nanaboush carrying the dead girl, first I made a drawing to pencil with a free style, with little valuation of the line. The idea was that it was staying as Alberto Durer's engraving.
Then, in the table of light, I passed to ink, in a leaf separated, the drawing made previously to pencil. The important thing here is to be left to go a bit, copying to fidelity the scribbles of the pencil.
When I finished inking the drawing in the new leaf, I digitized it to 300 dpi and save it with a format TIFF.

I opened PhotoShop, of the suite of Adobe CS3. Then I opened the saved drawing in format TIFF and I applied it a filter of the gallery. I used the filter "Plastic Wrap (Plastic Wrapping)." Lastly I added it a lightly orange coloration that gives it that touch of photography in sepia.
After placing the image, the story’s title and the author's name; I added the title of the collection and a stamp of the editorial invented by me, "Siverio Terror", together with my email. The armed general I realices it in CorelDraw 12. The work took me some eight hours.
That is everything.
I hope you like it.
